Roughly 1 in 3 Brazilian holidays now includes the family dog, and Santa Catarina has responded — but the difference between a hotel that tolerates pets and one that actually welcomes them is about R$60 a night and a lot of stress.
The genuinely pet-friendly pousadas of Garopaba
Garopaba, two hours south of Florianópolis, has become the state's unofficial dog-holiday capital. The pousadas here — most small, family-run, on the hills above Praia da Silveira and Praia do Ouvidor — actively want dogs, provide bowls and beds, and know which beaches allow off-leash running before 9am. Rates run R$320 to R$550 in high season with a pet fee of R$40 to R$80 per night, which is honest given that the owners genuinely enjoy the extra work.
The best places sit on the road between Garopaba town and Praia do Rosa, with big gardens and no highway noise. Look for pousadas that say "aceitamos pets" on their own website rather than just on booking sites — the former usually means real welcome, the latter often means grudging tolerance and a fee added at check-in. Ask about weight limits; some places cap at 15kg, which rules out most retrievers.
Beach-town hotels that actually let dogs on the sand
This matters more than the hotel policy: does the nearest beach allow dogs? In Santa Catarina, the rules vary by municipality. Praia do Rosa and Praia da Silveira are relaxed year-round if you go early. Praia Mole and Joaquina in Florianópolis officially ban dogs but enforce loosely off-season. Jurerê and Canasvieiras enforce strictly in high season with fines around R$200. Bombinhas bans dogs on the main beach entirely from December through February.
Book with the beach rules in mind, not just the hotel policy. A pousada in Garopaba that welcomes dogs and sits two blocks from a dog-legal beach is worth twice a Jurerê hotel that accepts your pet but will fine you at the sand. The southern coast (Imbituba, Garopaba, Praia do Rosa, Farol de Santa Marta) is where you’ll actually get to walk the dog on a beach. The north-island beaches are a legal minefield.
Mid-range chain hotels in Florianópolis and Balneário Camboriú
The three- and four-star chain hotels in the state's two big cities have quietly become quite good pet options. Rates run R$280 to R$520 with pet fees between R$50 and R$100 a night, weight caps typically at 20kg, and — critically — parking included, so you’re not moving the dog through hot streets to reach a car. The hotels around the Beira-Mar Norte in Florianópolis and along Avenida Atlântica in Balneário Camboriú are the pick.
The catch is that these are city hotels; there's no garden, so the dog needs walks around blocks that are noisy and hot from 10am onwards. If your dog handles urban environments, they work well as bases for exploring. If your dog is nervous or needs green space to decompress, spend the extra hour driving south to Garopaba or west into the hills.
Rural cabins in Urubici and the Serra Catarinense
The mountain region around Urubici and São Joaquim, four hours west of Florianópolis, is the state's best-kept pet-holiday secret. Small cabin-style pousadas on working farms rent whole units with wood-burning stoves, private gardens, and no restrictions on where the dog sleeps. Rates run R$400 to R$700 for a two-person cabin, no pet fee, and the altitude (1,200-1,800m) means cool weather year-round — a relief for thick-coated dogs.
This is Santa Catarina's coldest zone; snow falls occasionally in July and August, and frost is common May through September. Bring a coat for short-haired dogs. The upside is trails through araucária forest, waterfalls at Cascata do Avencal, and roads with almost no traffic. Book cabins that specifically mention a fenced garden — otherwise you’ll be leashing the dog every time it needs to relieve itself.
What the pet fee actually buys you
At the honest end, a R$60 nightly pet fee at a Garopaba pousada buys a dog bed in the room, food and water bowls, information on nearby dog-legal beaches, and a housekeeper who genuinely likes dogs. At the cynical end, R$100 a night at a Balneário Camboriú tower buys nothing except permission to bring the dog upstairs, and you’ll find a printed list of prohibitions on the desk.
Ask three questions before booking: what's included with the fee, what's the weight limit, and can the dog be left alone in the room. That third question separates the sheep from the goats — real pet hotels say yes as long as the dog is quiet; the fake ones say no, which means you can’t go to dinner without paying for a pet-sitter. If the answer is no, keep looking.
Hotels to avoid with a dog
Skip the resort hotels in Jurerê Internacional. They accept dogs on paper but the pool areas and restaurants are dog-free, the walk to a legal beach is over a kilometre, and the fees start at R$150 a night. Skip the smaller central hotels in Blumenau and Joinville — the buildings are old, the rooms are small, and the neighbourhoods have nowhere to walk. Skip anywhere on the BR-101 frontage road; the traffic noise is constant and there's no safe walking.
Also skip the all-inclusive thermal resorts in Piratuba and Gravatal. They technically accept small dogs but the thermal pool complexes are pet-free, which means you leave the dog in the room while you do the one thing you came for. It's not the hotel's fault — it's a health regulation — but it makes the trip pointless. If you want thermal water and a dog, rent a house with its own thermal pool in Gravatal instead.
Practical logistics on the road
The BR-101 has decent rest stops with grass patches every 40 to 60km between Florianópolis and Garopaba. Bring water; the roadside restaurants sell to humans only. Vets are easy to find in Florianópolis, Balneário Camboriú and Blumenau, harder in the smaller beach towns — save a number before you leave the city. Pharmacies stock basic pet medicine but not prescription items, so bring what you need.
Domestic flights within Brazil accept dogs in cabin under 7kg with a carrier and a health certificate under 10 days old; larger dogs travel in cargo, which most owners avoid. For anyone driving in from São Paulo or Curitiba, the trip is realistic in one day with a large dog and no drama; from Porto Alegre it's a comfortable four hours to Praia do Rosa on good highway.
