Why people stay in Balneário Camboriú
Balneário Camboriú, an hour and a half north of Florianópolis by BR-101, is Brazil's most vertical beach city — a 6-kilometre curve of 30-to-80-storey towers backing directly onto Praia Central, with Green Valley (regularly voted one of the world's top-5 nightclubs) up on the hill. It's shameless, dense, loud and extremely fun for a weekend if you go in knowing what it is. Argentinian, Uruguayan and Brazilian families flood it in January; Green Valley and the beach clubs of Barra Sul run at full tilt from December to Carnaval.
Who this suits: nightlife travellers, couples wanting a hotel-with-pool weekend, anyone who finds the density of Copacabana attractive. Who should skip: anyone looking for Brazilian charm (you will not find it — this is aspirational condominium culture), anyone who wants an empty beach (Praia Central in January is towel-to-towel), or anyone who wants to sleep before 3am on a weekend near Avenida Atlântica. The nicer, quieter beaches are 15 minutes away over the hill — Laranjeiras and Estaleiro.
At 9pm on a Friday in January, Avenida Atlântica is a slow crawl of rented convertibles, sorveterias doing R$25 açaí bowls, and lines forming outside the rooftop bars that top most of the mid-range towers. The Cristo Luz statue on Morro da Cruz lights up the hillside above the strip and is worth the 10-minute drive up for the view alone — free, open until midnight, and one of the only genuinely calm spots in the whole city after dark.
Off season — May through September — the picture flips entirely: half the beachfront restaurants shutter, Green Valley runs a skeleton calendar, and nightly rates drop by more than half. That window suits a quiet, cheap seaside stay with the cable car and the Cristo Luz to yourself, but the nightlife and beach-club reasons to come here simply are not operating, so don't book a July weekend expecting the December version of this city.
The three blocks inland from Avenida Atlântica are the tourist heart — hotels and apartment-hotels at R$280–R$650 peak, R$150–R$280 winter. Avenida Brasil, one block back, is quieter and cheaper. The Barra Sul end (near the cable car and Molhe) is more upscale and closer to nightlife; Barra Norte is calmer and better for families. Avoid anything on Terceira Avenida (Avenida do Estado) that claims 'perto da praia' — it's 800 metres inland and cut off by the main road. Rua 2900, running parallel to the beach through the tourist core, has the highest concentration of apartment-hotels and is the easiest base for walking to both the beach and the restaurant strip on Avenida Brasil. Book Barra Sul if nightlife is the point of the trip, Barra Norte if it isn't.
Things to do in Balneário Camboriú
The Unipraias cable car (parque temático) at the south end of Praia Central crosses over the hill to secluded Praia Laranjeiras. R$115 for the day pass, includes both stations and the zip line. Open 9:30am–6pm. Skip on windy days — the cable car closes.
Warung Beach Club on Praia Brava (15 minutes south by Uber, R$25) or the beach clubs at Estaleirinho. R$150–R$400 minimum consumption depending on the day. Warung on Saturday afternoon in January is the scene, book two weeks ahead.
The legendary Green Valley club up on Estrada da Rainha, 15 minutes uphill from Praia Central. Sunday afternoon summer parties from 2pm–10pm are the flagship event, R$180–R$400 depending on lineup. Uber there and back, do not attempt to drive.
The rock jetty at the south end of Praia Central, next to the cable car station. Free, walk out to the tip for the classic photo of the tower wall lit up at dusk. Best 30 minutes before sunset. Cachaça carts and grilled corn vendors along the promenade.
The 33-metre illuminated Christ statue on Morro da Cruz, reached by a 10-minute drive or R$25 Uber from the beachfront. Free entry, open until midnight, best after 8pm when the tower lights below are all lit. Bring a jacket — it's noticeably cooler than the seafront.
The nightly craft market strung along the Avenida Central promenade near the Barra Sul roundabout, open roughly 6pm–11pm December to Carnaval. Cheap leather goods, açaí stalls and local cachaça for R$10–R$40. Good for a slow post-dinner walk, skip the printed T-shirt stalls, they're the same everywhere.

Getting around Balneário Camboriú
From Florianópolis (Hercílio Luz) the drive is 90 minutes up BR-101, Uber R$220–R$280, or the intercity bus from Rita Maria terminal (R$45, 2 hours). From Navegantes Airport (closer) it's 25 minutes, Uber R$70. Inside Balneário, everything on the beach strip is walkable end to end. Cross-city moves — Barra Sul to Barra Norte — take the free tourist bus in summer or Uber for R$12. To Laranjeiras use the cable car, not the road (there's no beach access from the city side by car). Local buses along Avenida Brasil run every 15–20 minutes in season, R$5 flat fare, and are the cheapest way to reach the bus terminal for onward trips to Itajaí or Itapema.

It's genuinely built up — this is a vertical city, not a beach village. Go if you want nightlife, a hotel-with-pool weekend and the cable-car-to-Laranjeiras combo. Skip if you want unspoiled coast — for that drive 20 minutes to Bombinhas or Itapema. Two nights is the right dose.
It's a 5000-capacity outdoor club on a hillside 15 minutes uphill from the beach. Tickets R$180–R$500 depending on the DJ and how early you buy. Summer season December to Carnaval, Sunday afternoon and Friday/Saturday night events. Uber only — parking is a nightmare and drink-driving here means jail. Bring ID, they check.
December to Carnaval is peak — hot, crowded, expensive and fully switched on for nightlife and beach clubs. April, May, October and November give warm-enough weather with a fraction of the crowd and rates closer to R$150 a night. June to August is genuinely cold for a Brazilian beach town and most of the nightlife shuts, so only come then for the cable car and the Cristo Luz view, cheaply.
No — the beach strip, the cable car station and most hotels are walkable, and Uber covers everything else cheaply, typically R$12–R$25 within the city. A car is only useful for day trips to Bombinhas, Itapema or the Warung Beach Club circuit further south. Parking near Avenida Atlântica in January is scarce and not worth the hassle for a weekend trip.
