Why people stay in Itajaí
Itajaí is a working port city — Brazil's second-busiest container port after Santos, sits on the mouth of the Rio Itajaí-Açu. It's not a tourist destination in itself, but it has a proper fish market (Mercado do Peixe near the Molhe da Barra), the annual Marejada festival every October celebrating Portuguese immigration and seafood, and it's 15 minutes from Balneário Camboriú and 10 minutes from Navegantes Airport. Use Itajaí as a cheap-hotel base to save 30–40% off Balneário rates or as an overnight for early Navegantes flights.
The city itself divides in two: the working port and downtown (Centro, with the fish market, the container terminal you can see from most of the city, and a modest colonial-era historic zone around the Igreja do Santíssimo Sacramento) and Praia Brava (technically Balneário Camboriú's municipality but often listed under Itajaí — an upmarket beach zone with better sand than anywhere in Itajaí proper). Skip Itajaí if you want beach or atmosphere. Use it if you want cheap rooms and easy transport.
The Centro around Rua Hercílio Luz has functional business hotels at R$150–R$260 year round — cheaper than anything in Balneário. The Fazenda neighbourhood south of the river is quieter, more residential, similar prices. Praia Brava (technically Balneário Camboriú but often booked under Itajaí) has upmarket beach hotels at R$400–R$900. Avoid the industrial zones and anything near BR-101 with 'motel' in the name.
Things to do in Itajaí
The public fish market at the Molhe da Barra, Rua Silva Jardim end. Open 7am–5pm daily. Restaurants upstairs will grill or fry whatever fish you buy downstairs — R$45–R$70 for a lunch of fresh corvina, pescada or tainha with sides. The most authentic seafood experience in Santa Catarina.
The 10-day festival of Portuguese heritage and seafood at Parque de Eventos, usually the second and third weeks of October. R$20 entry, live fado music, huge seafood pavilion, R$50–R$90 seafood plates. Book accommodation by August — the city fills up along with Blumenau's Oktoberfest crowd overflow.
The 1 km rock jetty extending from Praia da Atalaia into the mouth of the Rio Itajaí-Açu. Walk out for close-up views of container ships entering the port. Free, always open, best at sunset. Watch for fishermen and the occasional dolphin in the river mouth.
The upmarket beach zone at the north edge of Balneário Camboriú, administratively often split between Balneário and Itajaí. Cleaner water than Praia Central, less crowded, backed by lower buildings. Beach clubs (Warung, Café de la Musique) charge R$150–R$400 minimum consumption in summer. 15-minute Uber from Itajaí centre for R$25.

Getting around Itajaí
Navegantes Airport (NVT) is 10 minutes from Itajaí centre — R$25 Uber, the correct airport if you’re basing here. From Florianópolis 90 minutes north on BR-101, Uber R$180, intercity bus R$40 (2 hours). From Balneário Camboriú 15 minutes south, local buses every 10 minutes for R$5. Inside Itajaí the Centro is walkable in 30 minutes; a car is useful for Praia Brava and the outer neighbourhoods. Uber is cheap for cross-city moves at R$10–R$20.
