What to expect at Praia de Jurere Internacional

Praia de Jurere Internacional is the calm, clear-water beach on the north-west corner of Ilha de Santa Catarina that turned into the state's showcase for beach-club culture in the 2000s. The sand is fine and pale, the water is protected from open-sea swell by the mainland across the bay, and the neighbourhood behind it was master-planned in the 1980s with wide avenues, low buildings and a green promenade. It matters because it is where most first-time visitors get their picture of Florianopolis: bright, safe to swim, and unusually organised for a Brazilian beach.

A visit tends to fall into three chunks. You walk in from Avenida dos Buzios, drop a kanga on the open sand between the beach clubs, then choose whether to pay for a lounger at Parador 44, Cafe de la Musique or P12 — each one runs its own DJ, pool and R$150-250 minimum consumption. Between them the sand is free, families set up under umbrellas, and vendors walk through with acai, grilled cheese on a stick and cold agua de coco. The west end near the old fort is quieter and shallower; the east end near the canal is where the party sits.

Come on a weekday in December or March for warm water without the January crush, and book a beach-club lounger online the night before if you want shade in high season — walk-ins are turned away by 11:00 on Saturdays. Skip driving in on New Year's week; the single access road jams for hours. Fortaleza de Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa sits a 10-minute walk west and pairs neatly with a morning swim before lunch back on the beach.
