The quieter neighbour to Balneário — long calm beach at Meia Praia, family pace, easy day trips to Bombinhas.

Itapema, 15 minutes south of Balneário Camboriú, is what Balneário was before the towers arrived — a working coastal town with a long, calm bay beach (Meia Praia) and only modest development. It's the north-of-Florianópolis pick for families who want beach without the density of Balneário and can't be bothered with the Bombinhas peninsula's traffic. Meia Praia is 5 kilometres of shallow, north-facing sand — flat water, no serious current, safe for kids — and the boardwalk (calçadão) is a proper 4pm walking scene.

The town divides in two: Meia Praia (the tourist beach with pousadas and apartment-rentals) and Itapema Centro (the actual town, with services, the bus station and cheaper food). Centro has almost no beach charm; Meia Praia has no genuine town life. Pick your side based on whether you want the beach 30 metres away or a supermarket 30 metres away. Off-season Itapema is very quiet — cafés close, half the pousadas shut — which is a bargain if you're happy walking an empty beach in a fleece.

By 9pm Itapema is closed rather than closing — the calçadão empties, the beach bars stack their chairs, and Centro's restaurants finish their last table around 10. There's no strip of clubs pretending to be Balneário's; the loudest thing after dark is usually a family barbecue on an apartment balcony. That suits couples with young kids, retirees on a budget, and anyone who wants to fall asleep to the sea rather than a sound system. Anyone chasing beach-club energy or a 2am caipirinha should book Balneário instead and treat Itapema as a day trip.

Low season (April to November, excluding July) is when Itapema makes its real case: Meia Praia is nearly empty on weekdays, pousada rates drop by half, and the fish restaurants at Ponta do Cabeço still open their doors even if half the tables sit unused. High season (December to February, plus Carnaval) brings São Paulo and Paraná plates, full car parks along Avenida Nereu Ramos, and pousadas that book out weeks ahead. Shoulder months — March and the run-up to Christmas — split the difference: warm water, thinner crowds, and rooms that haven't hit peak pricing yet.

Where to stay in Itapema

Meia Praia is the correct base — the blocks between Avenida Nereu Ramos (the beachfront) and Avenida Alcides Paladini have the highest concentration of pousadas at R$220–R$450 peak, R$140–R$220 shoulder. Anything advertised beachfront (frente ao mar) runs R$400–R$800 for a family room. The Centro end and Itaipava (further north, closer to Camboriú) are cheaper but require a car or bus to reach the beach. Avoid the areas south of Ilhota — technically Itapema municipality but 20 minutes from anything. Book anything within two blocks of the calçadão itself if you want to walk to the water in under five minutes; a block further back and you're paying Meia Praia prices for a ten-minute walk. Low season (April–June, August–November) knocks another 20–30% off the shoulder rates, and many pousadas will negotiate directly for stays of four nights or more if you contact them directly rather than book through a platform. For a first visit, book a room on or just off Avenida Nereu Ramos between the calçadão's midpoint and its north end, near Ponta do Cabeço, and walk everywhere.

Getting around & the essentials

On foot

Start at the south end of Meia Praia near the Ilhota channel, walk the beach or the parallel calçadão the full 5 km north past the mid-beach kiosks and lifeguard posts to Ponta do Cabeço. Climb the Morro do Cabeço trail from the north end (15 minutes uphill) for the viewpoint, then descend the same way. Return via the calçadão at sunset. Best on a Saturday afternoon for the local Brazilian family scene.

From Florianópolis it's an 80-minute drive up BR-101, Uber R$180–R$220, or the intercity bus from Rita Maria (R$38, 1h45). From Navegantes Airport it's 15 minutes, Uber R$45. From Balneário Camboriú, local buses run every 15 minutes for R$5 (the Praiana line). Inside Itapema everything at Meia Praia is walkable — the calçadão covers the full beachfront and most pousadas sit within five minutes of it. Itapema's own bus terminal is in Centro, a R$15–R$20 taxi or 20-minute walk from the middle of Meia Praia, so budget that transfer if you're arriving by intercity coach. For Bombinhas you need a car or Uber (R$80–R$100, 40 minutes) — the buses require a change and take 2 hours.
