The dates that matter
Brazilian Carnival is a moving five-day event pinned to the Catholic calendar. In 2026 the core runs Friday February 13 through Wednesday February 18 (Ash Wednesday). Santa Catarina's Carnival is not Rio's — there is no massive sambódromo parade in Florianópolis, and the state's tradition is more about beach parties, street blocos and the enormous gay-Carnival scene that has grown around Jurerê Internacional and the Lagoa da Conceição over the past 20 years. The result: prices spike harder than New Year's, but the vibe is beach-club rather than parade-stand.
Book six months out for anywhere on the Florianópolis island. Four months out for Balneário Camboriú, Bombinhas, Praia do Rosa. Two months out for the interior towns — Blumenau, Joinville, Urubici — which have almost no Carnival traffic and are the fallback for anyone who left booking late. Minimum stays of four or five nights are standard across the coast; some pousadas in Praia do Rosa require six nights and payment in full upfront by November of the previous year.
What Carnival costs in a hotel room
A mid-range beach hotel that runs R$400 a night in November hits R$1,100 to R$1,400 during Carnival. Praia do Rosa pousadas that charge R$550 in shoulder season move to R$1,600-2,200. The design pousadas on the hill in Rosa clear R$3,000 a night with a five-night minimum. Jurerê Internacional apartments — the ones that surround the beach clubs — go for R$2,500-4,000 a night for a two-bedroom, and they sell out by October the previous year. Balneário Camboriú's Avenida Atlântica towers list at R$800-1,400 for standard rooms.
The cheaper alternatives, in order: Blumenau or Pomerode (R$300-450, drive in for day trips), the interior of Florianópolis island (Costa da Lagoa, Ratones — R$400-600 but no beach), and the far-north beaches near São Francisco do Sul which don’t feature in the Carnival circuit and stay near shoulder-season prices. Airbnb entire-home rentals across the island average R$1,800-2,500 a night during Carnival week, roughly 3.5x the November rate.
The Florianópolis scene, honestly
Florianópolis has been the biggest LGBT Carnival destination in Brazil since the mid-2000s, and this shapes the whole feel of the week on the island. The main circuit runs between Jurerê Internacional beach clubs (Parador, Café de la Musique, P12) on the west and the Lagoa da Conceição bars on the east. Day parties start around 3pm and run until 11pm; night parties start at 1am and finish at sunrise. Entry to the big Jurerê clubs runs R$400-800 depending on the day and lineup, with international DJs booked six months out.
This is not a family Carnival week on the island. Beaches like Jurerê, Praia Mole and Lagoa are packed with a party crowd, hostels have queues to check in at 2pm on the Friday, and food delivery apps take three hours in the busy neighbourhoods. Families and quiet-holiday travellers should base in Canasvieiras (calmer, more Argentine-family focused), Daniela, or move off the island entirely to Bombinhas or Praia do Rosa. Even Rosa gets loud, but the crowd is younger surfers rather than club circuit.
Street blocos and the local Carnival
Beyond the beach clubs, Santa Catarina has a genuine street-Carnival tradition that gets overlooked. Florianópolis's Centro neighbourhood runs afternoon blocos on the Saturday and Sunday — the Bloco da Lagoa is the biggest, drawing 30,000 people down the streets around the Lagoa da Conceição. These are free, family-friendly until early evening, and the closest thing the state has to Rio-style Carnival. The Ribeirão da Ilha fishing village in the south of the island runs a slower, more traditional street celebration that locals prefer.
Laguna, on the south coast, has the most authentic old-Brazil Carnival in the state — a proper small-town festa with local samba schools, cheap street food, and no international DJ crowd. Room rates in Laguna during Carnival are R$350-550, roughly half of Florianópolis. The catch: nightlife stops at 3am, the beach is functional rather than beautiful, and if you want the party scene you have a 90-minute drive north. It's a good base for a family that wants the culture without the chaos.
Traffic and logistics — this is the real problem
The BR-101, the coastal highway that connects everything, is under permanent stress during Carnival. The stretch between Palhoça and Florianópolis backs up for 3-4 hours on the Friday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon of Carnival week. Balneário Camboriú to Florianópolis, normally a 90-minute drive, takes 4-5 hours on those days. If you’re flying into Florianópolis and driving elsewhere, land midweek before Carnival starts or accept the queue. Rental cars are booked out 60 days ahead and cost R$280-400 a day, double the shoulder-season rate.
On the island itself, driving between Jurerê and Lagoa on a Saturday night takes 90 minutes for a 25km trip. Uber surge pricing hits 4-5x normal. The workaround: base in one district and stay in it. If you want Jurerê beach clubs, sleep in Jurerê or Canasvieiras. If you want Lagoa nightlife, sleep in Lagoa or Barra da Lagoa. Trying to do both means you spend Carnival in cars. Airport transfers on the Saturday of Carnival can run R$250-350 for a 20-minute route.
The days around Carnival that are worth using
The week before Carnival — roughly February 6-12 in 2026 — is one of the best travel windows in the whole calendar. Weather is peak summer, sea is 24-25°C, everything is open, and hotels sit at high-season but not Carnival-peak rates: about R$650-900 for the mid-range beach hotel that costs R$1,300 the following week. Restaurants take reservations again. You can drive the BR-101 without drama. Flights are cheaper than Carnival itself by 30%. Any traveller with flexible dates should shift to this week.
The week after — starting Thursday February 19 — sees rates drop by half within 48 hours. The coast empties on Ash Wednesday afternoon as São Paulo and Buenos Aires drive home. By Friday the beaches feel post-apocalyptic in a good way. Weather stays at peak-summer temperatures through the end of February and into early March. Room rates around R$500-700 for what was R$1,300 the previous week. This is the best-value week of the entire summer if you can wait Carnival out.
Who should skip Carnival entirely
Families with young children who want a beach holiday: skip. Rates triple, restaurants don’t take reservations, beaches are crowded to unpleasant, and the party scene bleeds into the family beaches until late. Come the week before or the week after, get the same weather at a third of the cost. Retired couples looking for quiet coastal Brazil: skip harder — Carnival is the opposite of what you want, and you’ll pay peak prices for the frustration.
The Serra region, though, is a genuine escape. Urubici, São Joaquim, Treze Tílias and the wine-country routes see almost zero Carnival traffic. Room rates barely move — a good pousada in Urubici runs R$380-500 during Carnival, versus R$300-400 in shoulder season. Weather is warm days (24°C) and cool nights (13°C), the hiking trails are dry, the vineyards are open, and you can eat at any restaurant without a reservation.
