Santa Catarina or Jurerê Internacional: Choosing Your Base on Brazil's Southern Coast

Two very different kinds of Brazilian beach holiday, compared on drive times, neighbourhood character and what each one is genuinely good at.

Two coasts, two rhythms

Santa Catarina is a state, not a single resort, and that is the first thing to settle. Its coast runs from the lagoons of Laguna up through Florianópolis to the German-influenced beaches around Joinville and São Francisco do Sul. Jurerê Internacional sits inside that same state, on the north-west corner of Santa Catarina Island, about 25 km from Florianópolis city centre and roughly 35 to 45 minutes by car from Hercílio Luz International Airport depending on traffic on the SC-401. So this is not a state-versus-state comparison; it is a question of whether you base yourself in one polished beach district or range across the wider coast.

Jurerê Internacional is a planned, low-rise, upmarket beach neighbourhood: broad avenues, beach clubs, security at the entrances, and a summer population that swells hugely between late December and early March. It is excellent at what it does and poor value if you want to explore. The rest of Santa Catarina rewards a car and a looser plan: the surf beaches of the island's east coast, the oyster farms around Ribeirão da Ilha, the Serra do Rio do Rastro road inland, and the quiet coves of Bombinhas and Garopaba. Those are different holidays, not better or worse ones.

What a week actually looks like in each

Base in Jurerê and your days are simple. Praia de Jurerê and the adjoining Praia do Forte are wide, clean and patrolled; the Forte de São José da Ponta Grossa is a short walk for a view over the inlet. You can eat well without driving, and the beach clubs run from lunch into the evening. Rates in high season climb steeply, and a week in January in a mid-range hotel can cost noticeably more than the same room in November. Carnaval week in February is the peak of the peak: book four to six months ahead or choose another window.

Base in Florianópolis more broadly and you get much more variety for the same money. Stay in Lagoa da Conceição for restaurants and easy access to Praia Mole and Joaquina, both ten to twenty minutes away. Or stay in Centro for the public market, the older architecture and ferry links, using it as a launchpad to Barra da Lagoa, Campeche and Ribeirão da Ilha. From Garopaba, ninety minutes south of Florianópolis, you reach the whale-watching coast around Imbituba between July and November. A car is close to essential outside the island's bus corridors.

Beaches, food and the honest trade-offs

Jurerê's beach is calm andfamily-friendly, with the inlet side sheltered from swell. It is not a surf destination. For surf, the east coast is the point: Joaquina, Praia Mole and Moçambique, all within the island, plus Guarda do Embaú and Ferrugem further south. Jurerê also has no real budget tier. It is hotels and apartments at mid-to-upper rates, with a handful of cheaper pousadas on the periphery. If your budget is tight, Lagoa or Centro gives you far more room per real, and you can still drive to Jurerê for an afternoon.

Which one I would book

For a first visit of seven to ten days, I would book a hotel in Florianópolis proper, ideally around Lagoa da Conceição, and treat Jurerê as a day out. You keep the island's best food and beach variety on your doorstep, pay less, and still reach Jurerê in half an hour. Choose a Jurerê Internacional hotel instead if your priorities are a walkable upmarket beach, restaurants without driving, and a resort-style rhythm, and if you are travelling in a small group or with family who want everything within a few blocks.

Skip Jurerê in high season if you are on a budget or want to see the state. Skip the island entirely if your real interest is the Serra or the southern coast, because the drive times add up. Shoulder months, roughly April to June and September to early December, give you warm water, thinner crowds and much easier hotel availability across Santa Catarina.

Good to know

Questions, answered

How far is Jurerê Internacional from central Florianópolis?

About 25 km, typically 35 to 50 minutes by car via the SC-401, longer on summer evenings. There is no direct fast public transport link, so a car or rideshare is the practical option for anyone staying outside the neighbourhood.

When is the best time to book a hotel in Santa Catarina?

For the beach, October to early December and March to May offer warm weather with fewer crowds. Late December to February is peak season and Carnaval week is busiest, so reserve several months ahead for those dates.

Do I need a car to explore Santa Catarina?

For Florianópolis and Jurerê, no. For Bombinhas, Garopaba, the Serra do Rio do Rastro or São Francisco do Sul, yes. Distances are real: Florianópolis to Garopaba is about 90 minutes, and inland routes take longer than they look.
