Who Balneario Camboriu actually suits
Balneario Camboriu is a 6 km wall of high-rises facing an east-coast beach on the mainland, an hour and a half north of Florianopolis. It is the closest Brazil gets to Miami in silhouette and it makes no apology for it. It suits travellers who want a compact, urban beach holiday with proper nightlife, rooftop pools, elevator sea views, a functioning restaurant scene across every price band, and the option of clubs open until 6 am. It also suits families who want the same infrastructure without needing to seek out a car.
It does not suit anyone who wants low-rise charm, a village atmosphere, quiet, or a proper beach in the traditional Santa Catarina sense — the sand strip in front of the towers is narrow and the water works hard to serve 100,000 daytime visitors in peak. It does not suit anyone who prefers Praia do Rosa's or Bombinhas's low-density style. Balneario is deliberate density and either that thrills you or repels you.
The three main strips
Avenida Atlantica runs along the beach and is the premium address. Hotels here start at R$500 in shoulder and hit R$1,800 in peak; you get direct beach access, sea-view balconies, and the highest tower-density of restaurants and clubs. Avenida Brasil runs one block back and is the commercial spine — cheaper rooms from R$300, more shops, less immediate beach. Avenida do Estado further back is much cheaper (R$220 doubles) and 15 minutes from the sand on foot.
Pick Atlantica if you can afford it because the whole point of Balneario is the beach-tower rhythm and staying a block back weakens it. Pick Brasil if you want to save 30 percent on the room rate and are willing to cross a road. Skip do Estado unless you are on a strict budget — the walk to the beach in 32C heat gets old by day three. There is also Praia Brava a headland to the north, which reads as a quieter, more expensive extension and works for travellers who want the Balneario product with 40 percent less noise.
What a night costs in Balneario
Peak season, meaning late December through late February plus New Year specifically, Balneario is one of the most expensive places to sleep in Santa Catarina. Atlantica four-stars run R$1,000 to R$1,800, five-stars R$1,800 to R$3,000, Brasil three-stars R$500 to R$800, apartments for four R$700 to R$1,400. New Year's Eve specifically triples rates and requires four to seven night minimums booked six months out.
Shoulder season the numbers halve. April, May, September, October and November see Atlantica four-stars at R$450 to R$800, three-stars at R$280 to R$500, and apartment rentals from R$300 for four. This is when Balneario becomes good value against the alternatives. The city is designed for high-density tourism so infrastructure — restaurants, buses, taxis — works whether the strip is full or half-empty, which is not true of every resort in the state.
What is within walking distance
From most Avenida Atlantica hotels: the beach across the road, roughly 200 restaurants along the ten blocks between Rua 1000 and Rua 2500, a dozen clubs, three shopping malls including the Balneario Camboriu Shopping and the Atlantico Shopping, the Barra Sul cable car station that runs up to the Cristo Luz statue, and enough pharmacies, banks and 24-hour convenience stores to render a car pointless within the strip.
What requires a car or bus: Praia do Estaleiro and Praia dos Amores to the north, Praia de Laranjeiras to the south, the Beto Carrero theme park an hour up in Penha, and any hiking or rural trip. Uber is reliable and cheap within the city. The Barra Norte and Barra Sul neighbourhoods at either end of the beach are 20 minutes walk from central Atlantica but have their own restaurant clusters worth walking to. Balneario is the most walkable resort in Santa Catarina by some distance.
Balneario vs Florianopolis
These two are the honest big-city choices in Santa Catarina and they suit different trips. Balneario has denser nightlife, a more compact walkable strip, better direct-elevator beach access, and a more urban rhythm. Florianopolis has more beaches to choose from, more geographic variety, better food quality overall, more nature within reach, and less high-rise. Balneario is the trip; Florianopolis is a base for many trips.
For a first visit to Santa Catarina I would send most travellers to Florianopolis. For a party weekend, a bachelorette, a couples trip focused on rooftop pools and dinner-and-drinks, or a family trip that wants zero logistics friction, Balneario is the sharper pick. For a full week Balneario becomes repetitive; the strip is 6 km and once you know it you know it. Three to five nights is the sweet spot for a Balneario-only trip. A week combining Balneario with Itapema or Bombinhas gives you variety.
Praia Brava as the higher-end alternative
Praia Brava sits over a headland north of central Balneario and reads as the neighbourhood the wealthier residents moved to when Atlantica became too dense. Hotels here run R$700 to R$1,600 in peak, the beach is wider and less crowded than central Balneario, and the tower density is lower. It is a 15-minute drive back to the main strip for nightlife but has enough restaurants of its own to sustain most nights.
Book Brava if you want the Balneario product at 70 percent volume and 90 percent price. It is where I would send couples who want the Balneario aesthetic without the peak-season sardine feel. Skip it if you specifically came for the club and rooftop scene, because Brava sleeps two hours earlier than Atlantica does and requires the drive back for a proper night out.

Book central Balneario Atlantica if your priority is the strip, nightlife and rooftop pools, and your budget clears R$800 a night in peak or R$450 in shoulder. Book Brasil if you want the same city 30 percent cheaper. Book Praia Brava if you want the aesthetic with quiet. The single most common regret from visitors is booking a Balneario room away from Atlantica and then spending a week wondering why the trip felt flat. The strip is the product.
