When to visit Santa Catarina
December to March is glorious and packed. May and October are the quiet secret. Here's how to choose your month.
Empty Praia dos Ingleses on a bright shoulder-season morning
High season: December to February
Water hits 24-26°C, air 28-32°C, beaches full, restaurants full, prices up 40-60 percent. Book everything months out. This is when Argentine and Uruguayan families arrive by car — expect Spanish menus alongside Portuguese and R$ rates that feel imported. Carnaval (usually mid-February) doubles hotel rates again for four nights. If you can only travel in summer, aim for early December before school holidays or the second half of February after Carnaval.
Numbers help here: beachfront rooms at Jurerê Beach Village or IL Campanario Villaggio Resort run R$1,200-2,000 a night in January, while simpler options like Costa Norte Ingleses or Ingleses Praia Hotel sit at R$450-650 and still fill up. Reserve Jurerê and Praia Mole six months ahead; Canasvieiras and Ingleses can sometimes be booked three months out if you avoid the last two weeks of January. Expect BR-101 backups heading north into Floripa on Friday afternoons, and pay parking near Praça XV before 9am if you want a spot.
Shoulder: March-May and September-November
March water is still 23°C, crowds thin dramatically after Carnaval. April and May give you 22-25°C days, quiet beaches, restaurants that welcome walk-ins, and rates 30-40 percent below January. September brings whales to Rosa. October is warming again, R$ pousada rates still shoulder, best value month by a distance. This is the season the site is really built around — fair prices, room to breathe.
The whale-watching window is worth building a trip around: humpbacks arrive off Praia do Rosa and Barra do Ibiraquera from June through November, peaking in August and September, tracked by the long-running Projeto Baleia Franca. Boat tours leave from Imbituba, and a base like Casa Completa no Rosa or Pousada Native puts you within walking distance of the lookout points at minimal shoulder-season rates. One catch: October coastal calm does not extend inland — Blumenau's Oktoberfest crowds push room rates up in the valley even while Floripa beaches stay empty.
Low: June to August
Water 18-20°C, air 12-22°C, not swimming weather except for the brave. Some beach kiosks close. But Serra Catarinense comes into its own — Urubici at 5°C, cozy pousadas with wood stoves from R$180. Great time for São Joaquim wineries, Blumenau, and long lunches. Skip the coast unless you specifically want the empty-beach photograph.
São Joaquim, at 1,350 metres the highest town in southern Brazil, drops below freezing on winter mornings and occasionally sees frost or light snow — wineries like Villa Francioni and Pericó pour full-bodied reds that suit the chill better than the January harvest crowds do. Urubici's waterfall trails are at their most dramatic after winter rain; Hotel Torres da Cachoeira sits close to several of them, with doubles from around R$250. Book the Serra a month ahead in July, when school holidays send Curitiba and Porto Alegre families up for the cold.
Coast versus Serra: two different calendars
Santa Catarina really runs two climates at once. The coast follows a classic subtropical summer-winter swing, while the Serra Catarinense — Urubici, São Joaquim, Bom Jardim da Serra — behaves more like a temperate highland, with frost possible May through August and genuinely hot afternoons in January. Fog rolls into the mountains most mornings year-round, usually clearing by 10am, so plan viewpoint stops for late morning rather than dawn.
The SC-390 highway over the Serra do Rio do Rastro, with its stacked switchbacks down the escarpment, is at its clearest in April-May and September-October; winter brings fog and occasional ice on the upper bends, and summer afternoon storms can close visibility to a few metres. Pairing four days of coast with two nights inland works best in shoulder season, when both regions are near their most comfortable and neither is fully booked.
Festival calendar to plan around
Blumenau's Oktoberfest runs roughly seventeen days each mid-October and is the second-largest Oktoberfest in the world after Munich's — hotel rates in the Vale Europeu double or triple, and properties near the Vila Germânica festival grounds sell out three to four months ahead, so book Hotel Germânia or A Jóia de Blumenau early if the Bavarian bands and chopp are the point of the trip. Skip driving in on opening weekend unless you enjoy standing traffic on BR-470.
Itajaí's Marejada, honoring Portuguese immigration with bacalhau stalls and folk dance, runs late October into November and is a calmer, cheaper alternative if Oktoberfest's scale puts you off. Brusque's Fenarreco, a smaller lace-and-beer festival, also lands in October. None of these overlap with peak beach pricing, so a Serra-plus-festival itinerary in October often beats a pure coastal trip on both cost and crowding.
How far ahead to book, by season
December through Carnaval needs the longest lead time: beachfront rooms in Jurerê, Praia Mole, and central Florianópolis are effectively gone by October for the following summer, and last-minute options push you toward pricier apart-hotels like Hanna San Diego Apart Hotel or Atrium Studios by Xtay simply because they still have inventory. March to May and September to November are far more forgiving — two to four weeks out is usually fine, even for a place like Hotel Boulevard Beach Canasvieiras.
Winter is the one season where walking in works: outside the July school-holiday fortnight, Serra Catarinense pousadas and coastal towns like Garopaba routinely have same-week vacancies. The exception is any weekend touching Blumenau's Oktoberfest, which needs booking as far out as summer does. As a rule of thumb, match your lead time to how badly you need a specific address — for a generic pousada almost any season allows two weeks' notice, but for a named beachfront hotel in January, start looking the previous winter.
Frequently asked questions
What people ask before they set off on this one.
Varies year to year — usually mid-February to early March. Florianópolis has smaller but vibrant blocos; Laguna's Carnaval is one of Brazil's oldest.
Summer has short intense afternoon storms. Autumn and winter are drier. Annual rainfall is around 1,500 mm, spread evenly.
May-August for consistent south swells at Silveira, Rosa, and Joaquina. Water is cold — bring a 3/2 wetsuit.
October, hands down. Warming water, thin crowds, low season rates still in effect.
Not on the coast, but São Joaquim and Urubici in the Serra Catarinense occasionally see light snow or frost between June and August. It is rare enough to make local news each time, and roads can ice over on the SC-390 switchbacks, so allow extra driving time.
For January or Carnaval, book six months out if you want a specific beachfront hotel. Shoulder season (March-May, September-November) is comfortable with two to four weeks' notice. Winter is largely walk-in territory except around Blumenau's Oktoberfest, which fills up as early as summer does.
