December to February is peak: sea around 24-26 C, everything open, and hotel prices roughly double their winter rate. The absolute spike is 27 December to 10 January and Carnaval week (February or early March) — in Jurere and Praia do Rosa, three-night minimums and non-refundable rates are standard. March is the local secret: warm water, empty beaches, and rates drop 30-40% from the first week.

Getting around Santa Catarina: do you need a car?
There is no passenger rail in Santa Catarina, so it’s car or bus. A car is genuinely useful if you’re mixing the coast with the serra or hopping between beaches — the BR-101 runs the whole coast, and driving Florianopolis to Balneario Camboriu takes about 1h20, Florianopolis to Praia do Rosa around 1h30, and Florianopolis to Urubici roughly 3h30 up the SC-370 via the Serra do Rio do Rastro.
If you’re staying put in one area, skip the car. Florianopolis has decent municipal buses and plentiful Uber; Balneario Camboriu is walkable along Avenida Atlantica; Bombinhas is small enough to cycle. Long-distance buses from Rita Maria terminal in Florianopolis reach Blumenau (2h), Joinville (2h30), Balneario Camboriu (1h30) and Porto Alegre (7h) reliably. From Hercilio Luz airport (FLN), a taxi to the Centro is about R$70, to Jurere around R$100, and to Canasvieiras 40 minutes on a good day.
