Fortaleza de Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa

Fortaleza de Sao Jose da Ponta Grossa is one of three Portuguese forts built in the 1740s to defend the north entrance of the Baia Norte — the sea passage between Florianopolis and the mainland — from Spanish and later British attack. It's on a headland at the west end of Praia de Jurere Internacional, walking distance from the beach, and was restored in the 1990s by the Federal University of Santa Catarina which now runs it as an open-air museum. It matters because it's the single most substantial colonial military structure surviving on the island, and it explains why Florianopolis exists where it does.

The visit is a self-guided walk through six main structures. You climb the main staircase to the parade ground, cross to the commander's house (now a small museum with cannons, maps and the original 1745 chapel), and walk out onto the seaward wall for the panoramic view of the strait, with the mainland city of Governador Celso Ramos across the water. The lower battery is the most photographed spot — six restored cannon positions with the water directly below. A small casemate holds indigenous archaeological finds from the site's pre-Portuguese period. Allow ninety minutes; there is a small cafe and shaded picnic tables.

Best in the morning before the beach fills, or as a late afternoon walk out from Jurere. Wednesdays are free and busy with school groups. Skip visiting on rainy days — the interest is largely the outdoor walls and view. Combine with a beach afternoon on Jurere Internacional or, more atmospheric, on the sheltered Praia do Forte immediately below the fort itself, where locals actually swim.

Tips from the ground

Take a taxi in — the 20-minute walk from the Jurere bus stop is along an unshaded road.

Wednesday free entry means school buses; go early to avoid the class groups.

The cafe closes at 16:30; bring water if you’re on the ramparts late.
