Mercado Publico de Florianopolis

The Mercado Publico is the two-storey neoclassical market building that has anchored the centre of Florianopolis since 1898. Two long yellow wings run parallel between Rua Conselheiro Mafra and the bay; between them, an open central passage doubles as the city's most reliable meeting place. It matters because this is the honest, working heart of Florianopolis — a state capital that grew from a small colonial port, still tied to its fishermen and oyster farmers who supply the stalls here every morning.

The visit runs through both wings. Wing A on the Rua Conselheiro Mafra side is the food side: fish stalls, dried shrimp, artisan cachacas, cheese from the Serra, and the famous Box 32 bar where Florianopolis writers and politicians have drunk cold Original beer since 1979. Wing B is more crafts and clothing — leather goods, straw hats, herbal medicines. Upstairs are the sit-down lunch restaurants, and Bar do Nico on the second floor of Wing B is where locals send you for oysters and squid rings. Prices are honest: a dozen oysters R$45, a caipirinha R$20.

Best around 12:00 on a weekday, when the lunch crowd is real but there are still stools free at the bars. Saturdays are the busiest and shut early at 14:00, so aim for 09:30-11:00 that day. Skip Sundays — everything is closed. The market sits five minutes' walk from Praca XV de Novembro and the historic centre, so make it part of a walking loop with the cathedral and the ferry terminal. Cash and card both work at every stall.
