What to expect at Praia da Ferrugem

Praia da Ferrugem is the long east-facing beach south of Garopaba town, known for two things: heavy consistent surf on its beach break, and the summer sunset parties at the kiosks that draw a young Brazilian and Argentinian crowd. The 'ferrugem' — rust — in the name comes from an iron-rich stream that stains the sand red at the south end where it meets the sea. It matters because it's the beach that best explains why the whole Garopaba-Rosa coast has become the surf and slow-travel capital of southern Brazil.

You come in off the Estrada Geral, cross a small dune line on the wooden boardwalk, and land on a wide flat beach. The middle stretch is where the biggest crowd sits, with kiosks Batatinha and Kiosk 21 running caipirinha bars from mid-afternoon. The north end near Rua do Sole is more residential and calmer; the south end where the stream comes out is where surf photographers cluster. Board rental is R$60 for four hours from any of the shacks behind the main boardwalk. The wave is best on a south swell with west wind — most days from March through August.

Best in shoulder season — March, April, October, November — for surf without the summer party crush; December through February for the parties themselves. Skip Ferrugem if you have small children — the shore break is dangerous. Combine with Praia do Silveira and Praia da Vigia for a three-beach day; all are within walking or short-drive distance and each has its own character.
