What to expect at Praia do Silveira

Praia do Silveira is the horseshoe-shaped bay just south of Garopaba, and in 2020 it became the first World Surfing Reserve in the South Atlantic — a Save The Waves designation that limits development on the surrounding land in exchange for protecting the wave and the ecosystem behind it. Dolphins routinely feed inside the bay in the mornings, sometimes ten metres from swimmers. It matters as the flagship example of low-impact, community-run coastal tourism in Santa Catarina, and it's often quieter than Ferrugem next door.

The visit is straightforward: park at the top of Estrada do Silveira, walk down the dirt path to the sand, and pick your spot along the 1.5-kilometre curve. The wave breaks in three named sections — Cantinho at the north end (long right), Miolo in the middle (peaky beach break) and Praia Grande at the south (heavier). Two surf schools operate under the trees at the north end and rent boards for R$50 for two hours. Kiosk Silveira Bar does the best caldo verde in Garopaba for R$25. Look for the dolphin fishing tradition: local fishermen still call the dolphins in with signals, and the dolphins drive fish into their nets.

Best from March to November for surf and dolphins; December to February for warm swimming. Book board rental the day before by WhatsApp with Silveira Surf Club — high-season demand is real. Combine with the Trilha Encantada, a two-hour coastal trail that connects Silveira to Vigia and Ferrugem beaches. Silveira has almost no restaurants on the beach itself, so eat in Garopaba town four kilometres north.

Roughly 1 in 3 Brazilian holidays now includes the family dog, and Santa Catarina has responded — but the difference between a hotel that tolerates pets and one that actually welcomes them is about R$60 a night and a lot of stress.
