Ribeirao da Ilha

Ribeirao da Ilha is a stretched-out colonial village along the sheltered west coast of the island of Florianopolis, founded by Azorean settlers in 1760 and largely untouched by modern development. Its calm bay produces around 90% of the oysters farmed in Brazil, and the village is where you eat those oysters at their source. It matters as the counter-experience to Jurere and Balneario Camboriu: the low-key, honest, family-run side of Santa Catarina coastal tourism, where prices are fair and impact is small.

The visit is a slow drive or walk along the single road (SC-405) that hugs the shore for about 5 km. White-painted Azorean houses with blue trim face directly onto the water; between them, small piers where the fishermen still moor. Ostradamus, at the north end, is Santa Catarina's most awarded oyster restaurant (chef Jaime Barcelos, tasting menu R$180); Rancho Acoriano and Freguesia do Ribeirao offer honest oyster-and-fish meals for R$80. Book an oyster-farm tour with Fazenda Marinha Atlantico (R$40, 90 min) to see how the shells are grown on ropes in the bay, and taste raw straight from the water.

Best on a weekday for a real village pace — Saturdays and Sundays bring day-trippers from central Florianopolis. Come with an appetite: a full oyster meal is R$80-120 including a beer, and it's genuinely worth the drive. Skip if you don’t like seafood — there's little else here. Combine with the Ecomuseu do Ribeirao 3 km further south, a small folk museum in an original 1806 house documenting Azorean colonial daily life.
