A ranked, opinionated list of the seven day trips out of Blumenau that reward the drive — with real times, real distances and what's honestly not worth the diesel.
1. Pomerode — 35 km, 40 minutes north
Pomerode is the day trip you can’t skip. It bills itself as the most German town in Brazil and mostly earns it: 90% of residents still speak Pomeranian at home, the half-timbered houses on Rua XV de Novembro are the real thing rather than reconstructions, and the Museu Pomerano charges R$12 for a genuinely thorough walkthrough of the immigration story. Eat lunch at Restaurante Wunderwald — the kassler with red cabbage runs R$68 and the marreco recheado (stuffed duck) at R$92 is the local benchmark. Two people eat well for R$220 without alcohol.
Go on a Wednesday or Thursday. Weekends fill with day-trippers from Balneário Camboriú and the parking on the main strip becomes ugly. The zoo — Zoo Pomerode — is Brazil's second-largest and worth 90 minutes if you have children, R$45 adult admission. Skip the Wolff family miniature-town attraction unless it's raining; it's a scale model of Pomerode buildings and reads as a gift shop with an entry fee. Drive back via SC-418 rather than the BR-470 to catch the covered wooden bridge at Testo Alto, which is a photograph you’ll actually keep.
2. Praia de Bombas and Bombinhas — 105 km, 1h40m east
When Blumenau's summer heat hits 38°C in January and the Rio Itajaí-Açu smells of the wrong things, you drive to the beach. Bombas and Bombinhas share a peninsula that's the closest genuinely beautiful coastline to Blumenau — clearer water than Balneário Camboriú, smaller crowds than Florianópolis, and 39 named beaches within a 15-km radius. Praia de Quatro Ilhas is the pick for a swimming day; Praia da Sepultura for snorkelling if the wind is northerly. Parking on the peninsula in January is R$40 a day and you should arrive before 9am to find any.
The catch is the drive back on a Sunday evening: the BR-101 between Itapema and Blumenau seizes up between 5pm and 8pm and a 1h40m outbound becomes three hours home. Leave the beach by 3:30pm or stay for dinner and drive back at 9pm. Lunch at Ostradamus in Ribeirão da Ilha is a bridge too far from Blumenau, but Rancho do Anselmo in Bombinhas does grilled fish for two at R$180 and is 10 minutes from the sand.
3. Vale Europeu cycle route to Timbó and Rio dos Cedros — 45-90 km loop
The Circuito Vale Europeu is a signposted 280-km cycle route across seven German-heritage towns, and the pretty part is the Blumenau–Timbó–Rio dos Cedros loop you can do as a day trip. Rent a bike in Blumenau for R$80 a day, drive 20 km to Timbó, and cycle a 45-km circuit through Rio dos Cedros — a town of 11,000 people with a Bavarian-style church and a genuinely good bakery (Padaria Riedi, R$8 for a Bienenstich). The route is flat by Santa Catarina standards and follows the Rio dos Cedros valley almost the whole way.
For less-fit riders, drive to Rio dos Cedros directly (55 km from Blumenau, 55 minutes) and just do the town: the small local museum in the old town hall, a walk up to the barragem (the reservoir dam) for a view, lunch at a pousada restaurant with trout from the valley streams. This is the trip for a hot day when the coast is too far. Skip in winter — the valley holds fog until 11am and the temperature stays under 15°C.
4. Vale do Itajaí craft breweries — Indaial, Timbó and Pomerode circuit
Blumenau's Oktoberfest fame rests on Eisenbahn, but the valley has 30-plus craft brewers and the honest tour hits three or four of them by car (with a designated driver) in a single afternoon. Start at Bierland in the eastern industrial estate of Blumenau — R$45 for a flight of six — then drive 25 km to Cervejaria Zehn Bier in Brusque, then loop back through Cervejaria Das Bier in Gaspar. Each does 90-minute tours by appointment; book two days ahead by Instagram DM, which is genuinely how these places take reservations.
Eisenbahn itself is the Anheuser-Busch subsidiary and no longer feels like a craft experience — skip it in favour of the smaller houses, which is where Blumenau's brewing story actually lives now. Two people spend R$280 on tastings and lunch across three brewery stops. This is not a family trip; take a Uber back to Blumenau (R$90 from Gaspar) rather than drive, because the last brewery's tasting flight is not a small pour.
5. Parque Nacional da Serra do Itajaí — 25 km, 40 minutes
The Serra do Itajaí national park covers 570 square kilometres of Atlantic Forest right on Blumenau's doorstep, and it's the day trip locals do rather than the one tourists find. Access is through the Faxinal do Bepe entrance, 25 km southwest of town on gravel roads. The Trilha da Cachoeira do Sagrado is a 6-km round trip to a 40-metre waterfall in dense forest — snakes, tanagers, howler monkeys audible from the trail. Entry is R$18, weekends only, and you sign in at the ranger station where a warden gives you a hand-drawn map.
Go on a dry day; the trail turns to mud after rain and stays that way for two days. Bring proper boots, water, and don’t try in flip-flops however good the beach called. There is no restaurant, no shop, no phone signal, and the last kilometre of road demands a car with ground clearance. This is the best inland day trip from Blumenau on a clear autumn day and one to skip in January when the humidity in the forest is genuinely oppressive.
6. Joinville — 90 km, 1h20m north
Joinville is Santa Catarina's largest city and Blumenau's rival for the German-heritage crown, and a day trip there gives you two things Blumenau doesn’t: the Bolshoi Theatre School (the only branch outside Moscow, tours Tuesday and Thursday, R$25) and the Museu Nacional de Imigração e Colonização, which is a more serious institution than anything in Blumenau on the same subject. The palm-lined Rua das Palmeiras is genuinely striking and the Mercado Público does the best pastel de bacalhau in the state at R$14 a piece.
The honest catch is that Joinville is an industrial city of 600,000 people and doesn’t feel like a day-trip destination the way Pomerode does. You come for the two specific attractions and the market, and you’re back on the BR-101 south by 4pm. Don’t drive on Monday, when both the Bolshoi and the Museu de Imigração close. Combine with a stop at Estrada Bonita on the way back — a 15-km rural road through flower farms and colonial-era wooden houses that's worth the 40-minute detour.
7. Rio Itajaí-Açu rafting from Apiúna — 30 km, 35 minutes
The Rio Itajaí-Açu upstream from Blumenau has Class III and IV rapids between Apiúna and Ibirama, and three operators run half-day rafting trips for R$180 per person including transport, wetsuit and lunch. It's the closest whitewater to any major Santa Catarina town, and the operators (Apuama, Nivea Turismo and one seasonal outfit) all run trips October through April with two departures a day, 9am and 1:30pm. Water levels are best from November through February; by March the flow drops and the rapids get bony.
This ranks seventh because it's a single-activity trip rather than a place to wander, and the drive is short enough that it feels more like an afternoon out than a day trip. Skip if you can’t swim confidently, if you’re under 12, or if the operator warns of high water — they will cancel and refund on genuinely dangerous days, which is a good sign. Combine with lunch at a churrascaria on the way home in Indaial; the R$85 buffet at Churrascaria Boi na Brasa is fair value and the drive back to Blumenau is 25 minutes.

Pomerode by a distance — the German half-timbered aesthetic works better in cool, grey weather than in summer, and the restaurants doing kassler and marreco recheado are winter food. The Vale Europeu cycle route is also better in June than January because you’re not baking on the tarmac. Skip the beach and the waterfall hike from May through August.
Technically yes — they’re 65 km apart and both under 90 minutes from Blumenau — but you’ll ruin both by rushing. Pomerode alone is a five-hour trip if you eat lunch there, and Joinville needs three hours minimum for the Bolshoi tour and Museu de Imigração. Do them as two separate trips or spend a night in Joinville.
For everything on this list, yes. There are intermunicipal buses to Pomerode, Timbó and Joinville, but they run on schedules that turn a five-hour day trip into a nine-hour ordeal and don’t reach the beach towns or the national park at all. Rent from Localiza or Movida at Navegantes airport for R$140 a day and drive yourself.
Balneário Camboriú, which is 70 km east and gets pushed as the obvious beach day out of Blumenau. The traffic on the way in is punishing, parking within walking distance of the beach costs R$50, the sand is crowded, and the water quality after summer storms is not what you want. Drive the extra 35 km to Bombas and Bombinhas instead.
