Mercado Público de Florianópolis

Downtown, Rua Jerônimo Coelho, open Monday-Saturday 07:00-19:00, Sunday 07:00-13:00. Two levels: fishmongers and butchers below, restaurants and cachaça bars above. Eat at Box 32 (grilled fish PF R$28), drink at Boteco Zé Mané (chopp R$8). Buy cachaça de banana at Box 44 (R$35 for 600 ml). This is the honest local market — no tourist markup, real produce turnover, and where island cooks source.

The building itself dates to 1898, with cast-iron columns and a French-influenced roofline that survived a 2011 fire and restoration. Beyond the food boxes, look for the flower stalls near the Rua Conselheiro Mafra entrance and a handful of cheese and spice sellers who sell smaller portions than the supermarkets across the street, at similar or better prices. Trade thins after 15:00 as the fish counters close for the day, so arrive by midday if seafood is the point. Pair the visit with a walk through Praça XV de Novembro, two minutes away, and skip driving in — parking downtown runs R$15-20 an hour and Uber is cheaper and faster.

Feira da Beira-Mar and CEASA

Feira da Beira-Mar, every Saturday 06:00-13:00 along Avenida Beira-Mar Norte, mixes produce, prepared food, and crafts. Prices honest. CEASA in Estreito, the wholesale market, is best on Monday and Thursday mornings before 09:00 — a kilo of ripe mango for R$4, fresh basil for R$3 the bunch, if you’re self-catering.

CEASA is technically a wholesale hub, with trucks unloading from 04:00, but its retail pavilion is open to walk-in shoppers and needs no CNPJ or trade card — just cash or PIX and your own bags. It sits about 15 minutes from downtown Florianópolis by car, and a taxi there and back runs roughly R$40-50, which still beats supermarket prices if you’re buying more than a few kilos. At Feira da Beira-Mar, get there before 08:00 for the best fish and cheese stalls; by 11:00 it’s mostly foot traffic, live music, and food-truck crowds. Craft stalls at the Beira-Mar market run 20-30% above equivalent items at Mercado Público, so buy food there and souvenirs elsewhere.

Vale Europeu and Serra markets

Feira do Produtor Rural in Blumenau, Rua da Glória, Thursdays and Saturdays 07:00-12:00, sells German-Brazilian smoked sausage (R$40/kg), cuca (R$15 the tray), and colonial jams. In Urubici, the Sunday morning Feira dos Colonos on the main praça has pinhão in season, homemade wines from R$25 the bottle, and honey from Serra beekeepers R$30 the jar.

Pinhão season runs roughly May through August, and that’s also when Urubici’s feira gets crowded with day-trippers heading to Morro da Igreja, so go at opening rather than mid-morning. Skip the Blumenau feira during Oktoberfest week in October — prices climb and stalls sell out of the good sausage by 09:00 as festival crowds descend. Outside festival season, Blumenau’s market is quiet and fairly priced, and it’s worth combining with a stop at a Pomerode cheese shop 30 minutes north, since Pomerode’s dairy producers often supply the same stalls at a markup here.

Mercado Municipal de Itajaí and the fish auction

Itajaí, about 100 km and 1 hour 20 minutes north of Florianópolis by car, runs a public market by the port that doubles as a working fish landing point. Boats come in through the early morning and the attached auction, informal but real, sets the day’s price on shrimp and tainha before the retail counters open around 07:00. Shrimp here typically runs R$35-45/kg depending on size and season, cheaper than the same catch resold in Florianópolis restaurants.

Tainha season, roughly May to July, is when the market is busiest and freshest — boats land more fish and prices dip slightly with supply. Outside that window the market still functions but with a smaller catch and a narrower selection. There’s no real reason to detour here unless you’re already driving the BR-101 corridor toward Balneário Camboriú or Joinville; if you are, it’s a worthwhile 30-minute stop for cheaper, fresher seafood than the coastal resort towns sell.

Feira Agroecológica da Lagoa da Conceição

On the island’s east side, the organic growers’ market sets up on the praça in Lagoa da Conceição every Wednesday, 08:00-13:00. It’s smaller than the Beira-Mar or Mercado Público, but the produce is certified organic and comes straight from small farms in Ratones and São João do Rio Vermelho — lettuce, herbs, and seasonal fruit priced close to conventional supermarket rates, R$5-8 for most vegetable bundles.

This is the market to use if you’re staying near Lagoa or Barra da Lagoa and self-catering rather than eating out every night — a pousada kitchen stocked here costs a fraction of buying the same items at the tourist-facing minimarkets along Avenida das Rendeiras. Go early; by 11:00 the cheese and bread stalls are often sold out, and the whole market packs up by 13:00 sharp, earlier than any of the other markets on this list.

Mercado Municipal de Joinville

Joinville sits roughly 180 km and 2.5 hours north of Florianópolis, past Blumenau on the BR-101/BR-280 route, and its municipal market is modest compared to the capital’s — a single covered hall rather than a two-level building. Expect flower stalls (Joinville calls itself the City of Flowers), a few butchers, and a handful of vendors selling Pomerode-style smoked meats and cheese at prices close to source, R$35-45/kg for smoked cuts.

It’s not worth a special trip on its own, but if business or a drive north already puts you in Joinville, it’s a decent half-hour stop for smoked meat and honey to take home, generally 10-15% cheaper than the same goods sold in Florianópolis delis. Go weekday mornings; the hall is quiet by early afternoon and largely closed on Sundays, unlike Florianópolis’s market which keeps a Sunday morning session.
