The Feira de Artesanato at Praça XV runs daily with free browsing of Azorean lacework, woodwork and leather goods; prices are fixed but negotiable in the afternoon lull. Feira do Rio Tavares, held Saturday mornings near the airport end of the island, is smaller and more local than Coqueiros, worth a stop if you are heading south toward the dunes anyway.

None of these charge admission, and none require a purchase — this is one of the few genuinely browsable free activities that works equally well in rain or shine, since the Mercado Público is covered. Go early, before 9am, for the freshest stalls and before the cruise-ship crowds arrive on port days. Skip the souvenir stands directly outside the market entrance, which mark up the same crafts sold better and cheaper inside at Praça XV.

Practical notes for a free-only day

None of this costs anything to see, but getting to the trailheads does. Florianópolis city buses run a flat fare of around R$4.85 through the SIM integrated system, and Terminal Rio Tavares (TIRIO) or Terminal Rita Maria (TICEN) connect to Matadeiro, Barra da Lagoa and Canasvieiras without a car. Trailhead parking at Matadeiro and Naufragados runs R$15–R$25 for the day if you do drive, payable to informal lot attendants rather than any official body. The Beira-Mar Norte bike and running path is free and well-lit, a good warm-up walk before tackling Lagoinha do Leste the next morning.

Shoulder season — April to June and September to October — keeps parking costs down and trails quiet, while January and February bring both crowds and higher informal parking rates at every unofficial lot near the southern trailheads. Bring cash in small notes for parking and market snacks, since card machines are unreliable outside Centro. A day built entirely around this list — dunes in the morning, Ribeirão da Ilha at lunch, Morro da Cruz at sunset — costs nothing beyond the bus fare and whatever you choose to eat along the way.
