Florianópolis and Lagoa

Mirante do Morro da Lagoa: 20-minute drive up from Centro Lagoa, panoramic over the lagoon and the ocean, arrive 40 minutes before sunset for parking, free. Costão da Praia Mole: walk the rocks at the north end of Mole beach, sun sets behind the hills, free and uncrowded. Of the three, Mirante do Morro da Lagoa deserves the most planning: the gravel lot holds around fifteen cars, so on a clear January Saturday arrive by 18:40 for a 19:45 sunset or you’ll be parking on the shoulder of SC-406 and walking the last 400 metres. Costão da Praia Mole rewards a short walk over a drive — leave the car at the Joaquina end and pick your way over the boulders for twenty minutes, free, unpoliced, and slippery after rain. Beaches with a west-facing angle

Ponta do Sambaqui in Santo Antônio de Lisboa: the classic Florianópolis sunset, west-facing bay, oysters and chopp at Rancho da Baía R$60 per person while the sun drops. Serra Catarinense bonus

Morro da Igreja in Urubici (day trip territory) has a sunset that turns the basalt cliffs orange for eight minutes. Access closes at 17:30 in winter, though, so it's a summer proposition only. Cascata do Avencal viewing platform in golden hour — R$30 entry — worth the fee if you’re already inland. In town, Mirante da Serra da Boa Vista, free, west-facing over pine valleys.

Urubici is roughly three hours from Florianópolis by car on SC-390 and BR-282, which rules it out as an after-work outing — treat it as an overnight in the Serra Catarinense rather than a sunset detour. Morro da Igreja charges R$20 vehicle entry and the gate really does close at 17:30 between April and September, so ask your pousada for the exact closing time before you drive up. Cascata do Avencal is the better bet on a tight schedule since the platform sits close to the car park and the R$30 fee includes the whole afternoon, not just golden hour. Skip the drive entirely in fog season (June-July), when the cloud sits on the plateau and the view disappears.

North shore: Canasvieiras and Jurerê

Canasvieiras and Jurerê face north rather than due west, so the sun drops into the bay rather than sinking dramatically behind hills — softer colour, longer fade, better for a slow drink than a five-minute spectacle. The Canasvieiras beachfront promenade works well if you’re staying at Hotel Boulevard Beach Canasvieiras or Hotel Monteiro Canasvieiras, both a short walk from the sand, with beach kiosks serving caipirinhas from around R$18 while the light goes. Where the north shore wins is convenience for anyone already sleeping there: guests at Boulevard Ponta das Canas or Canasvieiras itself can walk to a decent sunset in under ten minutes, no car, no parking search, no headlamp for the walk back. Pick the north shore for an easy, unplanned evening; pick Sambaqui or Ribeirão da Ilha when the sunset itself is the whole point of the outing.

South coast: Garopaba and Imbituba

An hour south of Florianópolis on BR-101, Garopaba and Imbituba trade the capital's crowds for open Atlantic-facing beaches where the sun still sets inland over hills rather than into the sea — expect warm light on the dunes at Praia do Rosa rather than a classic ocean sunset. Anyone staying around Casa Temporada Garopaba is a five-minute walk from Praia da Ferrugem, where the fishing boats pulled up on the sand make a better foreground than anything in greater Florianópolis. Imbituba's harbour, near Pousada Bosque Das Aguas Imbituba, gives a quieter, working-town version of the same light with none of the Rosa crowds in January.

Treat this as an overnight rather than a sunset day trip: the drive back to Florianópolis after dark on BR-101 takes 70-90 minutes depending on truck traffic, and there's little upside to doing it twice in one day. Garopaba suits travellers who want whale-watching (July-November, boats from around R$120 per person) alongside their evening light; Imbituba suits anyone who wants the same coastline with lower prices and fewer surfers. Skip both in high summer weekends if crowds bother you — Praia do Rosa in particular gets the kind of traffic that eats into golden hour before you’ve even parked.

Balneário Camboriú and Bombinhas

North of Florianópolis, Balneário Camboriú's skyline gives an entirely different sunset — the sun drops behind the city's own high-rises rather than a natural silhouette, which either photographs well or doesn’t depending on your taste for towers. Travellers based at Casa com piscina Balneário Camboriú CasaAlbertiBc are close enough to walk the beachfront Avenida Atlântica for the view, with kiosks charging city prices — R$15-20 for a beer — rather than the Ribeirão da Ilha rate. Bombinhas, forty minutes further north, faces west across several small bays, and the Mirante do Costão do Zimbros headland gives a genuinely open horizon rather than a city skyline.

Anyone staying near Castellammare Bombinhas Flat Residence or Luxury Suites Vila Indonésia is within a short drive of Zimbros, and it's worth the fifteen-minute detour over settling for the busier Praia de Bombinhas centre, which faces the wrong way for a clean sunset. Balneário Camboriú is the wrong choice if you want an unbroken horizon — it's a city-lights sunset, not a nature one, and Bombinhas does the natural version better within the same driving radius.
