Postcard south-coast bay — pricier pousadas on green hills, whales in spring, honeymoon and boutique-hotel scene.

Praia do Rosa is the postcard beach of southern Santa Catarina — a curved bay backed by green hills covered in mata atlântica, no through road, a scattering of upscale pousadas and no high-rise anything. It's protected within the Área de Proteção Ambiental da Baleia Franca, which is why the buildings stayed low and the beach stayed empty-ish. Southern right whales calve in the bay itself July to November, sometimes visible from your pousada balcony. This is honeymoon and boutique-hotel territory, and priced accordingly.

The tradeoff: Rosa is expensive by Santa Catarina standards — pousada rooms at R$450–R$1200 in peak season, R$260–R$500 shoulder — and the isolation cuts both ways. There are maybe 15 restaurants in the whole area, no supermarket beyond a small mercadinho, and the nearest town (Imbituba) is 10 minutes away by car. If you want quiet, beauty and one of the best boutique-hotel scenes in Brazil, Rosa delivers. If you want cheap or lively, base yourself in Garopaba or Imbituba and day-trip.

By 9pm Rosa is candlelight and cicadas, not clubs — the sunset bars quiet down after dinner and most pousadas turn in early, the loudest thing on the Estrada Geral being a moto puttering back from Bar do Chico. Couples come here for exactly this: no traffic noise, no strip of neon, just a hammock and a view of the bay. Solo travellers on a budget, or anyone wanting a dance floor after midnight, will find Rosa flat and slow — that crowd does better in Garopaba, fifteen minutes north, or Florianópolis itself.

Rosa has one real cluster of shops, on the short stretch of Estrada Geral do Rosa near the Rosa Central access, plus a single mercadinho for basics — beer, sunscreen, instant coffee — priced 20–30% above a Florianópolis supermarket. There's no pharmacy after 8pm and no ATM inside the village itself, so cash and cards get sorted in Imbituba before you arrive. Families do fine here in January when the sea is calm, but anyone travelling with small children and wanting playgrounds or a proper supermarket should treat Rosa as a two- or three-night add-on rather than a full base.

Where to stay in Praia do Rosa

Rosa is functionally three zones: Rosa Norte (the north end with the whale project centre and the highest-end pousadas at R$600–R$1500), Rosa Central (mid-beach access and family pousadas at R$450–R$900), and Rosa Sul (the southern end with more rustic surf-oriented options at R$300–R$550). Peak season is mid-December through Carnaval and the whale-watching months of September–October. Book at least 8 weeks ahead in either. Winter (May–August) drops rates by 50%. Avoid booking anything on the upper hillside roads without a car — the walk down to the sand in flip-flops in the midday heat is not worth the room-rate saving. For a first visit, Rosa Central is the easiest call: walking distance to the beach, the sunset bar and the surf shops, and options such as Casa Completa no Rosa take shorter two- or three-night stays outside the whale-season crunch.

Getting around & the essentials

On foot

Start at Rosa Central beach access, walk south along the sand to the south headland, take the signed cliff trail over to Praia Vermelha. Return via the inland dirt road past the yoga centres and small mata atlântica patches. About 90 minutes at a slow pace, best done at 4pm with a beach kiosk stop halfway. Watch for whales offshore in spring.

From Florianópolis 100 minutes south on BR-101, take the SC-100 exit at Imbituba, Uber R$220–R$260. From Hercílio Luz Airport 90 minutes. There's no direct bus to Rosa itself — intercity bus goes to Imbituba (R$45) then local taxi or Uber for the last 10 minutes (R$25). Inside Rosa you need a car or scooter to move between the three zones — the beach is walkable end to end (2 km) but the pousadas are spread up the hillside roads. Scooter rental inside Rosa runs about R$120 a day from a stand near the Rosa Central access, useful if your pousada is up on the hillside and you'd rather not walk the steeper roads in the heat. Taxis between the three zones cost R$15–R$25 for a five-minute hop, and most pousadas will call one for you rather than have guests wait roadside.
